Meet Your Japan Specialist: Mary Yohannan
Mary Yohannan, founder of Life is Better Travelingยฎ, doesnโt recommend places she hasnโt seen for herself. This December 2026, sheโs traveling across Japan by bullet train, from the open-air food stalls of Fukuoka to the hot springs of Beppu, the temples and bamboo groves of Kyoto, an overnight stay with Buddhist monks on sacred Mt. Koya, and the food scene of Osaka. Along the way, sheโs touring hotels and traditional inns, testing the logistics, and finding the experiences worth your time, from a matcha tea ceremony to a sand bath and an early morning temple ceremony. Mary has spent 17 years planning multi-city trips for Pittsburgh travelers, and her clients consistently say she handles every detail, even the surprises. When you plan Japan with Mary, you get first-hand advice you canโt find in a guidebook.
โYou have been a pleasure to work with and we are so impressed with your knowledge, thoroughness, and pleasant professionalism. It gives us much peace of mind that all the details have been taken care of.โ

Why Plan Japan with a Life is Better Travelingยฎ Specialist
Japan is one of the easiest countries to love and one of the trickiest to plan. Trains, seasons, inns, and etiquette all work differently than at home. A specialist turns all of that into a trip that simply flows.
The Train Puzzle, Solved
Bullet trains, local lines, rail passes, and reserved seats can overwhelm first-timers. We map every route, tell you whether a Japan Rail Pass actually saves you money, and reserve the seats that matter.
The Right Hotel in the Right Spot
In cities as big as Tokyo and Osaka, location makes or breaks your day. We place you near the stations and neighborhoods youโll actually use, and our Japan specialist is touring hotels in person in December 2026.
Traditional Inns and Temple Stays
A night in a ryokan with a private hot spring bath, or with monks on sacred Mt. Koya, can be the highlight of your trip. These stays have their own customs and booking quirks, and we guide you through both.
Timing the Seasons
Cherry blossom and fall foliage seasons sell out early and shift every year. We plan around them so youโre not paying peak prices for bare branches.
Fewer Crowds, More Japan
We know when to visit Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama before the tour buses arrive, and which lesser-known places, like Fukuoka and Beppu, give you authentic Japan without the lines.
Someone in Your Corner
Delayed train, lost luggage, or a change of plans? You reach your agent directly, not a call center, before and during your trip.
What Your Planning Fee Covers
A custom Japan itinerary takes real research, often many hours before a single reservation is made. Your planning fee covers that design work up front, and it tells us youโre ready to plan together. Itโs how we make sure every client gets our full attention from the very first conversation.
Our travel planning fees start at $250 and include:
- A one-on-one consultation about your travel style, pace, and must-sees
- A custom day-by-day itinerary built around your interests
- Train routes, rail pass analysis, and seat reservations
- Hotel, ryokan, and experience recommendations matched to you
- Airport transfers, luggage tips, and arrival instructions
- Printed and digital travel documents
- Direct support from your agent before and during your trip
Why charge a fee at all? Like most travel agencies, weโre also paid by the hotels, cruise lines, and tour companies we book. That commission comes at no extra cost to you. Our planning fee is separate: it covers the hours of custom design and expertise that go into a trip built just for you, not a pre-packaged vacation.
Think of it this way: a first Japan trip can take dozens of hours to research on your own, and one wrong hotel or missed train connection can cost more than our fee. With us, that time comes back to you.
Frequently Asked Questions about Japan
Do I really need a travel agent for Japan?
You donโt have to have one, but Japan rewards careful planning more than most destinations. Train routes, rail passes, hotel locations, and seasonal timing can make or break a trip. A specialist handles those details so your time in Japan is spent enjoying it, not figuring it out.
Is Japan a good choice for a first international trip?
Yes! Japan is clean, safe, and incredibly organized, with excellent public transportation and plenty of English signage in major cities. The bigger challenge is the planning, which is exactly where we come in.
When is the best time to visit Japan?
Spring (late March to early April) brings cherry blossoms, and fall (November) brings vivid autumn colors. Both are beautiful and busy. Winter offers fewer crowds and hot springs, while summer is hot and humid but great for festivals. Weโll help you choose based on what you want to see.
How far ahead should I book cherry blossom season?
As early as possible, ideally 6 to 12 months ahead. Hotels in Kyoto and Tokyo fill quickly, and bloom dates shift slightly each year, so we build in flexibility to give you the best chance of seeing them at their peak.
How many days do I need in Japan?
For a first trip covering Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, we recommend 10 to 14 days. That gives you time to explore without rushing, plus a day or two to adjust to the time difference.
Do U.S. citizens need a visa for Japan?
Currently, U.S. citizens can visit Japan for short tourist stays without a visa, as long as they have a valid passport. Japan plans to introduce an online pre-travel authorization system called JESTA by 2028. Weโll confirm the latest entry rules when you book.
Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?
It depends on your route. The pass only pays off for certain itineraries with lots of long-distance train travel, and individual bullet train tickets are often the better value. We run the numbers for your exact trip.
Do I need to speak Japanese?
No. Major cities have English signs on trains and in stations, and translation apps make daily life easy. We also provide tips for dining, etiquette, and getting around so you feel confident from day one.
Can you plan Tokyo Disney Resort or Universal Studios Japan?
Yes! Our Disney expertise makes us a great fit for Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, and we can add Universal Studios Japan in Osaka. Both parks are hugely popular, so planning tickets and timing ahead is key.
What is a ryokan or temple stay?
A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn, often with tatami mat rooms, multi-course dinners, and hot spring baths. A temple stay, like those on sacred Mt. Koya, lets you sleep at a Buddhist temple, eat vegetarian temple cuisine, and join a morning ceremony. Weโll help you find the right one and explain the customs.
Whatโs changing for Japan travel in 2026?
Japan tripled its departure tax in July 2026, from about $7 to about $20 per person, usually added to your airfare. Starting November 1, 2026, tax-free shopping also works differently: you pay sales tax at the store and claim your refund at the airport before you leave. We keep our clients up to date on every change.
Has your team been to Japan?
Our founder, Mary Yohannan, is exploring Japan in person in December 2026, visiting Fukuoka, Beppu, Kyoto, Mt. Koya, and Osaka. Sheโs touring hotels and traditional inns so your recommendations come from first-hand experience.
What does your planning fee include?
Your planning fee covers the custom design work: your consultation, a day-by-day itinerary, train planning, hotel and experience recommendations, travel documents, and direct support before and during your trip.
Do you only plan for travelers in Pittsburgh?
No. Weโre based in Pittsburgh, but we plan Japan trips for travelers across the U.S. (Weโre currently not planning vacations for residents of California, Washington, or Hawaii.)
